By the term Occupational Therapy we refer to the therapeutic intervention that enhances the participation of the individual in “projects” – activities that are meaningful to him/her , with the aim of enabling the individual to conquer or develop skills, or to prevent their loss, so that he/she reaches the maximum level of functionality and autonomy in all areas of his/her life. These interventions can occur at individual or group level.
Specifically here at “Vima Koino”, Occupational Therapy is for adults who are experiencing :
- Chronic severe or mild Psychiatric Disorders across the whole spectrum of the following: (Psychoses , Emotional disorders, Depression , Personality Disorders , Mental – Cognitive deficits and difficulties , Social isolation , withdrawal , lack of motivation).
- The objectives of Occupational Therapy (group or individual) are :
- To evaluate the problems of individuals in communication, interaction and relationships with others.
- To facilitate the engagement of people with similar goals , problems or life roles in activities that are meaningful to them .
- To understand and express feelings generated by group interaction and relationships with others and to be motivated towards change .
- To use the principles of the social microcosm in addressing issues of inclusion or exclusion from desired social roles.
- To develop self-awareness , self-understanding, self-efficacy, hope and optimism in everyday life.
- To encourage social contacts and social reintegration, to reduce self-stigmatisation.
- To reduce the consequences of the disorder – symptoms and to encourage compensatory behaviours.
- To become autonomous in handling Activities of Daily Living.
- To better structure and make functional the use of free time and participation in recreational , creative activities.
